VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT HYALITE ELEMENTARY!

Hyalite Elementary and Emily Dickinson Elementary are having a Jump Rope for Heart event on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 - 11 a.m. at Emily Dickinson. They have had MSU athletes help in the past and it made a huge difference for the kids attending! They need help turning ropes, encouraging kids, and trying rope skills with the students. Helpers could arrive around 8:45 to check out the facilities prior to the fun beginning at 9:00.

CANCER SURVIVOR SPEAKER - RICK BENDER

On February 10th at 7:00 p.m. the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program and MSU Health Promotion will be sponsoring a nationally-recognized speaker Rick Bender, cancer survivor, who will be talking about the issue of smokeless tobacco.

Rick was diagnosed with cancer at age 26 due to long-term use of spit tobacco. Multiple surgeries to remove the cancer cost him part of his tongue, jaw and use of his right arm. Rick’s doctors did not expect him to see his 30th birthday. We are grateful to Rick for his willingness to share his story with college students around the country.

This educational program will address an important public health issue relevant to MSU students. With the increase of indoor smoking bans the tobacco industry has stepped up production and marketing of smokeless products – college students are a primary target of these marketing campaigns. MSU is currently debating the issue of a tobacco-free campus policy, which would include smokeless tobacco. We feel this is a timely and important educational opportunity for all MSU students, faculty and staff.

The Nordic Ski Team has our Bobcat Christmas Pole Saturday, December 12, at Bohart Ranch.

There is plenty to do to prepare for the race, including setting up and taking down the stadium, timing, taking bibs, registration, ect. If there is any interest from athletes to get A.L.L. points doing something easy and fun it would really help make our race great!

Volunteering could last from 7am-11am, and as long as people would like.

Prepares students from all majors to participate in Web ventures and to become Web-informed citizens. No previous Web or programming experience required.

CHIN 130 D – Historical and Literary Journey into Modern China (taught in English)
The focus of this course will be on twentieth-century Chinese short stories and novellas in English translation. We will look at modern Chinese literature in its historical setting as well as from the point of view of literary critical theory.

MUS 101 IA – Enjoyment of Music
Introduces students to the rich legacy of Western Art Music, defined as notated musical traditions in Europe and later in the USA from liturgical chant to the present. Explores the historical context that led to the development of important genres and influenced the lives of composers. Facilitates active listening and curious inquiry into the language of music.

ML 100 IH – Intro to Issues in International Studies
Introduces students to a range of issues in the field of international studies through an interdisciplinary approach to world regions. Accepted studnets will be enrolled in CLS 460: Teaching Internship, a 2 or 3 credit upper division course for teaching, and will have the option of taking a 1 credit independent study course (CLS 470). This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain teaching experience in a seminar-style course and may be especially valuable to students in teaching majors or students seeking administration to graduate school with teaching assistantships.

The MSU Office of Community Involvement has set a Service Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7.

Volunteers have four options to choose from: Bridger Clinic mailings and Big Brothers Big Sisters gift wrapping at Family Fest will both take place in the Strand Union Building on campus. There will also be the option to go to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank and help prepare race packets for the Huffing for Stuffing Thanksgiving Day Run or help kick-off this year’s Can the Griz food drive by picking up donated food in a Bozeman neighborhood.

This event is open students, faculty/staff, and community members. Families are welcome. Transportation is provided. Meet 15 minutes ahead of time in the Strand Union Building, on campus, in between the Ask Us desk and the Market.

A maintenance day for the Dinosaur Playground has been planned for
Saturday, October 3rd from 8:30 to 5:00.

We will be inspecting and tightening bolts, sanding edges, installing
benches and pickets, distributing new fiberfill and touching up paint.

Lunch will be provided (we will be grilling hamburgers) and we have
disposable masks and gloves.

We are asking volunteers to bring work gloves, rakes, shovels, wheel
barrows, cordless drills and/or hand sanders.

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

The Help Center in Bozeman is currently looking for interns and volunteers to serve as a Crisis Intervention and Referral Specialist. Duties include answering calls on the crisis lines, recording call details in database, and searching database for appropriate referrals as needed, all with the assistance of a trained crisis counselor available at all times. The Crisis Intervention and Referral Specialist will Intern/Volunteer for one 4-hour shift per week, for a total of approximately 12-16 hours per month, and commit to the program for at least nine months. Shifts are flexible, as the Help Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please note that the internship opportunity is unpaid.

Intern/volunteer must be 18 years of age or older from any major, be a skilled listener and communicator (written and oral), committed to ongoing learning and personal growth, be non-judgmental, be able to handle tense moments and adhere to strict confidentiality.

Fall 2009 training will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 17th & 18th, 2009. This is a mandatory training prior to beginning the internship/volunteering.

Exception for Prize Money for SAs outside the playing season and during summer vacation period

The membership adopted legislation last April that made an exception to the prize money legislation prohibiting the receipt of prize money by Student-athletes. It is now permissible for individual sport SAs (ski, tennis, track and field, cross country, and golf) to accept prize money after initial enrollment in a collegiate institution if the following conditions are met:

1) The prize money must be based on the student-athlete’s place finish or performance
2) The event must be an open event (not invitation only)
3) The competition must occur outside the declared playing and practice season
4) The competition must occur during the summer vacation period
5) The prize money may not exceed actual and necessary expenses
6) The prize money may only be provided by the sponsor of the open event

Please note that if student-athletes in individual sports plan to take advantage of this limited exception to the prize money legislation, they must keep detailed receipts of any expenses they incur as this documentation may be requested at a later date.

This course is specifically designed for non-majors as an introductory, yet broad and rigorous course in the techniques, materials, vocabulary and application of drawing. You will develop your ability to produce hand drawn work while also broadening your understanding of art terminology, theory and the critique process. As a 3-hour studio class, you will develop and practice your drawing skills in class. Partial time will be given to lecture, demonstration and one-on-one interaction. MSU needs important information about you and your health insurance before you will be permitted to participate in work-outs. Please follow these steps to complete all the necessary paperwork prior to your arrival. Additionally, you can learn about the type and level of insurance MSU will provide during your participation:

DINOSAUR PLAYGROUND BUILD

The build week, June 10th-14th, for the Dinosaur Playground is quickly approaching and they still need volunteers, the days they need the most help are Wed or Thurs, but they are happy to have volunteers at any time.

I have attached a form that you can complete and return to dinosaur.playground.bozeman@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer on your own. I would like to get a group together to go over and help on Wed or Thur, so if you are interested in that please let me know and I will add you to the list and choose a time where we can all volunteer. Child care is available for ages 2-12 (toilet trained) at the Ridge Athletics and at the new Parties R Us. It would be best that those who need child care complete the individual form so we can forward the form to the child care committee. Also included on the form is a list of ages that can be on the work site and help build the playground if any of you have children that would want to help.

NCAA DEGREE-COMPLETION AWARD

The application for the NCAA Division I Degree-Completion Award for the fall/spring 2009-10 term is now available at:

To be considered for this award, the student-athlete must have completed eligibility at an NCAA Division I member institution; enrolled originally in or before September, 2004; exhausted institutional eligibility for athletics-related aid (five years) and be within 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of completing an undergraduate degree.

All of the applications are reviewed by a committee of representatives from seven NCAA Division I member institutions. Funds ordinarily allow awards to be made to less than one-half of the applicants. Therefore, it is important to stress to your students that they must fill out the application completely and provide all supporting documents in order to be considered for this award.

The completed application and supporting documents must be mailed to me at the national office and be postmarked not later than May 22. The committee will make its decisions on funding by June 30.

VOLUNTEER AT THE HELP CENTER

The Help Center in Bozeman is currently looking for interns and volunteers to serve as a Crisis Intervention and Referral Specialist. Duties include answering calls on the crisis lines, recording call details in database, and searching database for appropriate referrals as needed, all with the assistance of a trained crisis counselor available at all times. The Crisis Intervention and Referral Specialist will Intern/Volunteer for one 4-hour shift per week, for a total of approximately 12-16 hours per month, and commit to the program for at least nine months. Shifts are flexible, as the Help Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Intern/volunteer must be 18 years of age or older from any major, be a skilled listener and communicator (written and oral), committed to ongoing learning and personal growth, be non-judgemental, be able to handle tense moments, and adhere to strict confidentiality.

Summer and Fall 2009 training will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19, 2009. This is a mandatory training prior to beginning the internship/volunteering.

Packet Pickup: Sign up early and pick up your packet at Pub 317 on race morning between 8-9 am. Come early to avoid the mad rush. Busses will transport runners to the start at 9:15 am for the 10:00 and 10:30 am gun.
Course: The Half Marathon course will start on Patterson Rd heading west and loop south to meet the 10K course for the finish. 10K starts at Nash & S 3rd, heads to Goldenstein, hooks up with city trail system and finishes near 317 Pub. It's mostly downhill and may be muddy or icy!

We’re not an actual team and this doesn’t mean anything except that the organizers have a way to track that we got 100 people there. If you are already on a team, please write “The Network” in parentheses after your real team name. If you have already registered, please let organizers know on the day of the race that you’d like to be included on list of runners to benefit The Network. VOLUNTEER FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Special Olympics is looking for student-athletes and staff to volunteer to assist with their opening banquet on May13th. Some of the areas in need of help are food servers, table 'monitors', and possibly directing the athletes. Monitors would be at the table(s) and remind Olympians to carry dishes to utensils to garbage; help them get seated if needed, etc.

They will be serving about 1700 people in shifts between 4:30 and 5:45P in Shoyer Gym, and will need about 20-25 volunteers from us, because they will be serving lots of people in a short amount of time!

Chief Joseph Middle School wants to celebrate DR. SEUSS DAY, on FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH for READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK.

They are asking you to read from a Dr. Seuss book aloud to one of their classesThey will host a GREEN EGGS and HAM breakfast in the Library at 7:30am for teachers and readers. Then they will have some fun reading aloud to students during Advisory period from 8:20 – 8:50 (8:30 -9:00ish for Primary Center).

There are a lot of spaces to fill and would LOVE to have you come read aloud to one of their wonderful Primary grades or Junior High classes!
